Jurriën Timber will miss the World Cup for the Netherlands after failing to recover from a groin injury. The 24-year-old Arsenal defender has 11 caps and one goal.

The Dutch federation said he had not recovered sufficiently to meet medical guidance. After consultation with medical staff, he will leave the training camp in New York after Monday’s match against Uzbekistan at 20:45.

His withdrawal adds to a growing list for Ronald Koeman’s side, following the withdrawals of Xavi Simons, Matthijs De Ligt and Stefan De Vrij.

Timber had been a fitness doubt for weeks after an ankle injury in mid-March. He returned in a match that finished 1-1 after extra time and was lost 4-3 on penalties. He came on in the 66th minute and showed no signs of pain.

To compensate, Koeman has called up Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida, 26, who has 20 caps.
