According to a report from AS, it has been revealed that a Real Oviedo supporter has been arrested for making racist gestures directed at Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe.

The incident occurred on 24 August during the La Liga clash at the Carlos Tartiere stadium.

In the 37th minute, shortly after Mbappe scored the opening goal for Los Blancos, the fan was seen imitating a monkey with both gestures and noises from the home stands.

The National Police later confirmed the arrest, classifying the act as both a crime against moral integrity and a hate crime.

Details of the development

The supporter was identified after police carried out a detailed review of images and videos circulating on television and social media.

Following his detention, the individual was taken to the Oviedo Court of Instruction No. 1, where he gave a statement.

The Professional Football League (LFP) had already reported the case immediately after the game, stressing that the footage had reached a much larger audience due to its rapid spread across platforms.

Alongside the criminal proceedings, the fan is also facing an administrative sanction under Spain’s Law against violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport.

This legislation stipulates fines ranging from €60,000 to €650,000 for very serious offences, as well as potential bans from entering stadiums.

Furthermore, the matter has been referred to the Delegate Prosecutor’s Office for Criminal Protection for Equality and Against Discrimination, which handles hate crime cases.

Under the Spanish Penal Code, the offence could carry a prison sentence of up to three years.

This arrest comes at a time when both La Liga and Spanish football authorities are under increased scrutiny to tackle racism within the sport.

For Mbappe, the incident echoes similar controversies surrounding other high-profile players, including Vinicius Jr., in recent seasons, highlighting once again that despite progress, the fight against discrimination is far from over.
