It’s not often a club will travel on a 7,000-mile round trip for a competitive cup tie, but at least Celtic have the comparative cushion of a home game before flying into Asia to take on FC Kairat, as it’s Livingston who make the slightly less daunting 70-mile round trip for tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) SPFL clash at Paradise.
The 0-0 draw with the Kazakhstan champions in midweek is closely followed by the away tie this coming Tuesday, with Livingston acting as the buffer between the UEFA Champions League home and away legs.
The first visit of David Martindale’s side this term, though, still ranks high in the pecking order for Celtic’s No.1, Kasper Schmeichel, who will be facing Livingston for the first time since joining the Hoops.
While the UEFA Champions League games may grab the limelight, for the Dane the spotlight is firmly on the visit of the West Lothian side as Celtic go all-out for a three-out-of-three win rate in the league and another three points added to the tally.
The goalkeeper said: “It’s just as important a tie. I’ve said this many times on many different occasions - as a footballer, your job is the next game.
“We can’t be thinking about the Champions League now, we have to think about Livingston, because if we take our eye off the ball there, then we risk not getting the result that we need.
"It’s a massively important game for because we are building and we are fighting on lots of different fronts in competitions and the league.
“So this game is vitally important and we are treating it exactly like that.”
