Manchester United custodian Senne Lammens has quietly solved one of United’s biggest problems since arriving last summer. The Red Devils turned to the Belgian in a bid to replace the error-prone Andre Onana.
The Cameroonian’s performances had been making headlines for all the wrong reasons, and his deputy, Altay Bayindir, had failed to step up as well. The English giants wanted to address the situation once and for all after struggling in the position for the last few seasons.
United deviated from their Premier League-proven strategy, passing up the opportunity to sign FIFA World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa in favour of the relatively unknown Lammens. While the move raised plenty of eyebrows and generated little excitement among fans, it was hardly a panic buy.
Instead, United had scouted the 23 year old for a while and moved on the advice of chief goalkeeper scout, Tony Coton. Following his debut against Sunderland in October last year, everyone realised that the Red Devils had pulled off a coup.
Lammens had very little top-flight experience when he arrived at Old Trafford, but his 90 minutes against the Black Cats proved that it mattered little. The Belgian kept a clean sheet on his debut, with United securing a 2-0 win.
It was the Red Devils’ first clean sheet of the season and a sign of things to come. Lammens grew in status as the games passed, ensuring that one of the most problematic positions in the team was no longer heavily assessed.
Instead, fans raved about the young custodian’s dominance from set pieces, his ability to pull off smart saves, and his composure with the ball at his feet. The Belgian went on to register eight clean sheets in 32 Premier League games, and is widely considered the signing of the season.

Lammens made several crucial saves during the course of the season, and statistics now show how important those interventions were to United’s third-placed finish.
According to Sky Sports, Lammens prevented the most goals in the Premier League this season. The report states: “Arriving as an uncapped 23-year-old signing from Antwerp, Senne Lammens was a revelation in his first season as a Premier League player.”
“The statistics suggest that he prevented more goals than any other goalkeeper in the competition this past season.”
The Belgian kept six clean sheets in 16 games under Michael Carrick, highlighting the key role he played in United’s rise to third place in the Premier League table this season.
Lammens’ success story paints an impressive picture of United’s scouting and recruitment departments and removes the need to invest in the position this summer. Meanwhile, Onana has done a decent job on loan at Trabzonspor, but all signs indicate that he has played his last game for United.
The Red Devils are therefore likely to cash in on the Cameroonian this summer and raise further funds for squad reinforcements.
