Kick It Out condemned the crowd reaction at Elland Road after a Ramadan break during Leeds United’s Premier League match against Manchester City on Saturday. The organisation said in a statement the response was massively disappointing.
Play was halted in the 13th minute under a pre-arranged protocol to allow Muslim players to break their fast, with an explanation displayed on the scoreboard. Despite that message, loud jeers were heard around the ground.
City won 1-0, Antoine Semenyo deciding it with a strike at the end of the first half.
Asked about the incident, Leeds assistant Eddie Riemer said he had focused on the game, but would be disappointed with some supporters if it happened and that lessons should be learned.
Pep Guardiola called for respect for religions and diversity, noting the Premier League permits brief pauses for fasting. He said the stoppage is allowed by competition rules.
At full time Daniel Farke was shown a red card after entering the pitch and confronting the referee. Riemer described the manager’s reaction as emotional and complained about time-wasting and a final ball that was not allowed.
Farke will not be in the dugout for Tuesday’s Premier League match against Sunderland AFC.
