Southend United have appointed Kieron Dyer as their new head coach, handing the former England midfielder his first senior managerial role.

The 47-year-old has signed an initial two-year contract at Roots Hall, with the option of a further year, as he steps up from coaching roles at Chesterfield and Ipswich Town. He arrives after leaving his position as first-team coach at Chesterfield, where he was a key part of Paul Cook’s staff.

Dyer enjoyed a distinguished playing career, earning 33 England caps and making over 250 Premier League appearances for clubs including Ipswich, Newcastle United and West Ham United. After retiring, he returned to Ipswich in a variety of coaching roles before moving into senior coaching at Chesterfield.

His appointment comes after Kevin Maher’s departure, with Southend looking to rebuild following recent National League campaigns that have seen them push for promotion but fall just short.
