Rebecca Knaak made a perfect start to Euro 2025 as Germany won their Group C opener against Poland 2-0.
The City defender played the full 90 minutes as the eight-times winners won their opening match of the tournament in Switzerland.
Germany were on top in the first half with nearly 75% of possession but some wayward finishing meant the two sides went in level at half-time.
Linda Dallmann fluffed their best opportunity from the edge of the box while Knaak almost got on the end of a corner with a header.
They finally got the breakthrough seven minutes into the second half when Jule Brand cut inside and fired a 20-yard shot into the top corner.
And the doubled their lead in the 66th minute when Lea Schuller headed home her 53rd international goal.
Poland, playing at the Euros for the first time, tried to get themselves back into the game but Ann-Katrin Berger made a brilliant save to keep out Ewa Pajor’s header.
But the German defence, with Knaak at the heart of it, stayed strong to pick up all three points and move top ahead of Sweden who beat Denmark 1-0 earlier in the day.
Germany face the Danes in their next game on Tuesday at 17:00 (UK).
