Kobbie Mainoo’s troubles under Ruben Amorim continue, with the midfielder still waiting for his first Premier League start of the season.
Against Manchester City, Mainoo was rewarded with yet another appearance on the bench by Amorim, who refused to push Bruno Fernandes higher up the field despite Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount’s unavailability.
Amorim’s decision to start Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte against Manchester City backfired, as the visitors lacked any control in the middle of the park.
The Portuguese turned to Mainoo after the hour mark. During the final 30 minutes, the 20-year-old was arguably United’s best player, winning every ground duel he engaged in and completing 100 per cent of his passes.
He even left Pep Guardiola perplexed with his dazzling feet. On the half-way line, Mainoo dispossessed a City player before beating two more to carry the ball into the final third.
A report now suggests that the Spaniard is one of his admirers.
According to Teamtalk, Guardiola has “approved” a shock raid on United for their prodigious midfielder.
It is claimed the noisy neighbours are considering making a move for Mainoo, who wanted to depart Old Trafford in the summer.
Guardiola reportedly views the United star as “one of England’s brightest prospects.” It is added that his ability to “adapt to high-pressing systems aligns perfectly with City’s philosophy.”
Carlos Tevez was the last United player to make the controversial switch back in 2009.
Apart from City, Chelsea and Newcastle United are also monitoring Mainoo’s situation under Amorim.
Having said that, the way the United head coach is setting up his team, Mainoo might outlast him in Manchester.
