Bayern made it four wins from four in the new season thanks to a 3-2 victory away at Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday evening. Goals from Serge Gnabry, Luis Diaz and Michael Olise had put them a commanding 3-0 up, but Augsburg hit back through Kristijan Jakic and Mert Kömür to set up a tense finish. “We did the right thing on the ball for long periods, otherwise we wouldn’t have created so many chances. We need to be calmer in our defending at times,” coach Vincent Kompany said in summary. “The goals we conceded obviously annoy us. But on the other hand, we failed to take a lot of chances. A team first needs to create that many chances, which we did,” added captain Manuel Neuer. fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction from Augsburg.
Max Eberl (board member for sport): “Four games, four wins. The team showed very good character. If we’d taken our chances better, the game would’ve been over earlier. That allowed Augsburg the chance to get back in it. There are still things we need to improve.”
Vincent Kompany: “The two goals we conceded obviously annoy us. But we had lots of chances and remained a threat. It was good in the first half but not over the whole game. We did the right thing on the ball for long periods, otherwise we wouldn’t have created so many chances. We need to be calmer in our defending at times. There’s still work to do. It’s a matter of staying calm and taking the tempo out the game at certain moments. Then you’ll regain momentum. We conceded two goals from very few chances. That’s what we need to work on, and we’ll get it right. We came into the campaign on the back of a very short pre-season, have won all four competitive matches – three of them away from home. We’re now top of the table with six points, plus we’ve got a title. It’s not perfect, but we’ll manage it. We know what we need to work on.”
Manuel Neuer: “The goals we conceded obviously annoy us. But on the other hand, we failed to take a lot of chances. A team first needs to create that many chances, which we did. We’ll get those things right over time. We did it against Leipzig, scoring six goals. Today was actually impressive with three goals away from home, but we also failed to take a lot of chances.”
Josip Stanišić: “It was a good game from us for long periods. But then we again had a few minutes where we made too many mistakes, which allowed the opposition back into the game. We can’t let that happen. But thankfully we still won. Everyone did their bit. We’re there for each other. Our patterns of play are right and the desire is there. We really wanted to win the game, which you saw today. But it’s still early in the season and we can still work on a lot of things. I also want to wish Robin Fellhauer a speedy recovery. I hope it’s nothing serious.”
Sandro Wagner (head coach): “I always struggle to talk about pride, but I’m proud of my team today. Our journey had a wonderful evening today. The result is a catastrophe and really annoys me. But what the guys did with the ball, in terms of structure, was great. Obviously Bayern had chances with their quality.”
Finn Dahmen (goalkeeper): “It’s not a given to fight back from 3-0 down. We’re making good progress. Lots of things definitely weren’t perfect today, but I’m proud of the team. You can really see the progress. We’re excited about the weeks to come.”
