A spirited performance from both sides ends in favour of Korea Republic, who dug deep to grind out a 2-1 comeback win over Czechia in Guadalajara.

And it's a shame that goal did not count, because Korea Republic are now 2-1 up on the night!

Oh Hyun-gyu did well to time his run before getting on the end of a low cross from Hwang In-beom, who is in line for man of the match honours!

Czechia nearly restore their one-goal lead from, you guessed it, another set piece, which saw West Ham's Tomás Soucek get on the end of a bending ball into the box, but he jumped offside just a tad early.

The final ten minutes are shaping up to be tasty!

It was a rough night for Bayer Leverkusen star striker Patrik Schick before he was hooked by Miroslav Koubek and replaced with Slavia Prague veteran Tomás Chory. Czechia will need more from him this summer if they're to reach the knockout stages...

But it didn't last long!

Korea Republic have justifiably pulled level through a cheeky finish from Feyenoord's Hwang In-beom!

A classy finish from the sitting midfielder to restore parity!

A shock opener just before the hour mark sees Czechia, once again relying on their ability from set-pieces, take the lead thanks to a Ladislav Krejcí header from Vladimír Coufal's long throw!

They've left Son Heung-min and Korea Republic stunned!

Korea Republic pick up where they left off, carving through Czechia's backline before Lee Jae-sung's chance at a close-range tap-in was denied by Kovár after the shot-stopper's initial save on Hwang In-beom's low effort was spilled out to the Mainz forward.

Despite a few moments of individual brilliance from Son Heung-min, Korea Republic were unable to find a breakthrough against a stout Czechia side.

Son has another pop after dribbling between two Czechia defenders before eyeing up Kovár's near post, but his curling effort cannot tuck away in the bottom corner.

The Korea Republic star is coming to life in the later stages of the opening half.

Son has a pop from range in a bid to break the deadlock, but the LAFC talisman can only watch his effort blaze over Kovár's bar.

We have our first hydration break of the evening, and it's perhaps a good time to point out that Son is just the second player to represent Korea Republic at four World Cups.

Undeniably the nation's best-ever footballer.

Czechia are banging on the door now, and they're doing so through set-piece threats - something they relied heavily on during their qualification campaign.

It's been an even if not underwhelming opening ten minutes here, as both Korea Republic and Czechia feel each other out in the early exchanges.

The World Cup is officially up and running with one of the most eventful opening games you will ever see. That second half was sheer insanity for sendings off. But it's Mexico who start off with the win.

It's now THREE red cards in the World Cup opener - but this time for Mexico! César Montes is the latest to walk for a last-man challenge on Khuliso Mudau at the end of normal time.

South Africa are now down to NINE men after a VAR intervention as their elder statesman Themba Zwane is dismissed for hitting out at Roberto Alvarado. It's a very long way back for Hugo Broos' men now.

A change for the hosts and one that will really make some of you feel old

We've hit the interval in Mexico City and as first halves go, that one was a decent start to this World Cup. The hosts played some nice football and are unfortunate not to be further ahead.

It should be a second right on the stroke of the interval for Mexico but Brian Gutiérrez fluffs his lines and sends the ball rolling wide.

There will be another four minutes of added time before the break

El Tri aren't letting up as Quiñones is the latest to lay siege to Bafana Bafana's goal with a shot which comes back off the outside of Williams' lefthand post

Jiménez gets his right boot to a left-sided cross into the box but Williams is equal to it with an almost slow-motion stop.

The game's slowed quite a bit since the in-game hiatus but the hosts have every right to feel comfortable with South Africa yet to have a shot on goal.

We are officially underway in the 2026 World Cup!

An absolutely rousing rendition of the Mexican national anthem before kick-off. There really couldn't have been a better place to host the opening game of this World Cup

The flags of all 48 nations competing in this year's tournament are being brought into the stadium one by one. It's not quite as longwinded as the Olympics make it look

There's just over half an hour to go to kick off but the football world doesn't stop. Real Madrid have just confirmed José Mourinho's return. The Portuguese's returns to the Bernabéu has been the worst-kept secret and is now official as he signs a three-year contract.

Nothing confirmed yet but this would be a major injury for Japan ...
