Sunderland have sanctioned a third January exit, with defender Joe Anderson joining League Two Barrow on a permanent deal. According to Sunderland Echo, the 24-year-old has agreed an 18-month contract for an undisclosed fee.

Anderson moved from Everton in January 2023 but struggled to break into the first team. He was among those training away from the main group after being told in the summer he was not in Régis Le Bris’s plans.

Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said it had been a difficult period with limited game exposure, but praised Anderson’s character and application. He added that the switch offers a platform for the next stage of the defender’s career and wished him well.

The move follows Jay Matete’s permanent switch to MK Dons, while Timothee Pembele has joined Le Havre on loan until the end of the campaign. Abdoullah Ba and Ian Poveda are still seeking new clubs.

Anderson said he was delighted to sign, noting talks progressed quickly after initial interest and a positive conversation with the manager. He hopes to contribute on the pitch and bring leadership off it, describing himself as a modern defender who values clean sheets and calm build-up play.

Ukraine U21 forward Timur Tutierov has impressed at the Academy of Light and featured in senior squads over the festive period. With opportunities limited for now, he is said to be close to a loan move to League One Exeter City until the end of the season. Gary Caldwell’s side have fared better than many expected, though they sit only three points above the drop zone.
