Leeds United made history again, winning 2-1 at Manchester United for a first league victory at Old Trafford in 45 years. Noah Okafor’s first-half double decided it.
yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk highlights three key conclusions from the performance.
Manchester United finished with 10 men after Lisandro Martinez was sent off for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair, then Casemiro headed in a Bruno Fernandes cross to set up a nervy finish. Leeds stood firm, managed the final stages and carried three huge points back across the Pennines.
With Anton Stach out injured, Daniel Farke paired Ethan Ampadu with Ao Tanaka rather than Ilia Gruev to keep the ball. Tanaka produced a polished display in the build-up and was close to a goal after winning possession and skipping past Senne Lammens.
Leeds might have been further ahead at the break, but after Casemiro reduced the deficit the visitors had to contain the late surge. Tanaka’s cramp and the introductions of Gruev and Willy Gnonto helped stem momentum, and the away side recycled the ball smartly to see out seven added minutes.
The win is a major step towards safety. Leeds are six points clear with six to play, Brighton at home on the penultimate weekend are their only top-half opponent left, and virtually-relegated Wolves and Burnley still visit Elland Road. They are not safe yet.
