Kylian Mbappé (26) has said that the current France squad is the most talented that he has been in, but not yet the best.
Mbappé was part of the France squad that went on to win the FIFA World Cup back in 2018 in Russia. He was also part of the team that made the run to the final of the 2022 World Cup, only losing to Argentina on penalties.
The 2026 World Cup, the final major tournament of the Didier Deschamps era, is fast approaching. During the current international break, Les Bleus logged two positive results, getting their World Cup qualifying campaign underway with wins against Ukraine (2-0) and Iceland (2-1).
Those matches marked something of a return to form for Mbappé, who netted twice and registered an assist across the two matches. Speaking in an interview with L’Équipe, the captain has given his verdict on the current squad.
“Is this the best team since I became an international? The most talented, yes. The best, not yet. It is the one that has the most potential, yes. It is infinite. In every position, there are starters at the best clubs in the world,” began the Real Madrid forward.
He added, “But as a team, we aren’t stronger than the team that was world champion in 2018, nor the team that went to the final in 2022. Does this team have the potential to be the best team? 100%. Will it be? It is up to us. We have to be ambitious with players of this quality.”
