Kylian Mbappé (26) left Paris Saint-Germain to join Real Madrid, in the quest to win that all-elusive UEFA Champions League title. However, in his first season away from the Parc des Princes, it was PSG who won the trophy for the first time in their history. The France captain, however, is happy for his former club.

Mbappé left Les Parisiens on a free transfer and in somewhat acrimonious circumstances, amid a pay dispute that has dragged on for many months. On a collective level, he has endured a difficult first season with Los Blancos, which ended without any major trophy being secured.

Real Madrid didn’t get close to winning the Champions League, crashing out against Arsenal at the quarter-final stage. However, Mbappé, speaking to M6, didn’t display any bitterness at having missed out on the historic achievement.

“I was happy because I have quite a few friends in the team,” began the France captain. “It is a club that has meant a lot to me. It is the club where I stayed for the longest period in my career, for now. It is special for the Parisiens, for the supporters. It was a logical continuation. We were close in previous years, and they succeeded. PSG will enter into a new sphere,” he added.

Mbappé reached the UCL final with PSG in 2020, before losing to Bayern Munich, whilst in his final season with the club, they made the semi-finals, coming unstuck against Borussia Dortmund.
