Real Madrid’s title hopes suffered yet another blow when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Girona, but more than the result, the team was frustrated by the officiating.

During the game, Real Madrid’s star player Kylian Mbappe was brutally elbowed by Girona’s Vitor Reis, which led to the Frenchman bleeding profusely around his forehead.

Despite that, the referees didn’t award Real Madrid a penalty, and the VAR didn’t recheck the incident either. But the real drama erupted when it was observed that the official La Liga broadcast hadn’t shared a single photo or a video showcasing Mbappe bleeding.

La Liga denies censorship claims

According to AS, league officials have explicitly denied any directive to suppress images of the injury.

They clarified that there would have been no institutional problem with airing the footage had a clear shot been captured.

Instead, the league says that the omission was purely a result of the available camera angles at the time of the incident.

The technical explanation provided by La Liga points to a specific moment at 89 minutes and 13 seconds into the match.

When the medical staff arrived to treat the Frenchman, the only available camera angle was obstructed by the arm of a Real Madrid doctor, which accidentally covered Mbappé’s face and obscured the wound.

La Liga further noted that they aired eight different replays of the elbow itself, arguing that they made no attempt to downplay the aggression of the play.

Unlike situations involving pitch invaders, there is no regulation prohibiting the broadcast of blood or injuries.
