Real Madrid’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Elche has sparked yet another wave of criticism, and this time it comes from one of Spanish football’s most respected voices.

Santiago Canizares, the legendary La Liga goalkeeper who represented Real Madrid during the 1990s and later became an icon at Valencia, has openly questioned the level of performance shown by Xabi Alonso’s team, a performance that has directly benefited Barcelona in the title race.

The match last night left a sour taste for the league leaders, who were outplayed for large phases by Eder Sarabia’s Elche.

Despite escaping with a point, the overall image of Los Blancos raised alarm bells

Barcelona’s victory the previous day meant that the gap at the top has now been reduced to a single point, tightening the pressure on Alonso’s side and further exposing their current vulnerability.

Criticism from Canizares

On Cope’s programme El Partidazo, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo, Canizares analysed the game with the blunt honesty he is known for.

He highlighted the inconsistency that has been creeping into Real Madrid’s performances for weeks.

Speaking about the issues he sees unfolding, Canizares didn’t hold back. He explained, “First, it’s a problem of lack of form.

“There’s no system that works when you bring in four new players, which you have to do because you can’t play the whole year with the same ones, and Arnold has to play someday, and Ceballos, and Rodrygo… and then at halftime you say, ‘Where’s Valverde? Where’s Vinicius?

“Let’s see if it’s because the best players aren’t there and that’s why they’re not playing well…”

It is indeed true that this season, Real Madrid lack balance, rhythm, and above all, clarity.

Alonso’s rotations, once praised as bold and modern, are now beginning to raise doubts.

Real Madrid have not won in their last two league matches, and cracks are beginning to show at a crucial moment in the season.
