Tensions between La Liga and Real Madrid have once again come to the surface, with league president Javier Tebas openly criticising the club and its communication strategy.

In a recent appearance on SPORT, Tebas addressed several sensitive topics, including the competitiveness of the league, refereeing controversies, and the growing friction involving Real Madrid and their president, Florentino Perez.

During the interview, Tebas was first asked whether Barcelona’s current advantage over Madrid, built during Los Blancos’ recent poor run, could be considered decisive.

The La Liga chief made it clear that the title race remains wide open, regardless of temporary momentum swings.

“No, because if you had asked me that question when Madrid was in first place, I would have said the same thing.

“It’s not definitive; there’s still a long way to go in the league, and Barça is struggling to win games.

“Sometimes the results are misleading because of the goal difference, but there are others who lose or draw and find it very difficult. That’s what’s important about the competition.”

Real Madrid in crisis?

The conversation then shifted to the idea of “crisis”, a word often used when big clubs fail to meet expectations.

Tebas was asked whether he believes Real Madrid are currently in crisis, similar to how Barcelona were labelled at points last season and earlier this campaign.

Drawing on past experience, Tebas played down the narrative and explained,

“No, I’ve seen this movie before. I’ve seen seasons where people talk about a crisis, and then the team that was in crisis in November wins by 6 or 7 points with the same players.

“There’s a media issue. They’re obliged to win all the time, and since they don’t always win, as soon as they don’t win two in a row, they’re in crisis, or they have problems.”

Problems between Real Madrid and Barcelona

The most explosive part of the interview came when Tebas was asked about the escalating tension between Madrid and Barcelona, with refereeing at the centre of the debate.

Tebas made it clear he wanted to be precise about where he believes the pressure is coming from.

“In my opinion, it is not Futbol Club Barcelona that is causing the tension in this case. Nor is it the other clubs.

“It is Real Madrid against everything, that is, against Barcelona, against the referees… Against everything.”

Tebas then addressed the narrative he believes is being built around refereeing decisions and past controversies, including the Negreira case.

He carefully separated past investigations from present-day refereeing decisions, stating,

“The narrative is that what is happening today with some refereeing errors is the fault of what happened in 2019 or 2017.

“The aim is to create a narrative that referees are now biased. That is very dangerous because it is not true.”

He went on to clarify La Liga’s stance on the matter and criticised how the issue is being amplified through club channels.

“Everyone already knows my opinion on the Negrera issue. I’m not saying that Barcelona’s actions at the time, or those of its leaders, were appropriate, far from it.

“But to go from that to saying that today, when a Real Madrid player is not awarded a penalty in a game, it is a consequence of that.

“That is creating tension all weekend on Real Madrid’s television channel, through the president of Real Madrid. I think they are very confused.”

Finally, Tebas was asked whether he had considered stepping in as a mediator to calm the situation. His response reflected both realism and frustration.

“No, because I am also the target of attacks, so I don’t think I am the most suitable mediator in this matter.”
