Barcelona are LaLiga champions after beating Real Madrid 2-0 in the Clásico, securing the title with three matches to spare. According to AS, Flick’s side would have lifted the trophy even without VAR, based on its projection of the technology’s impact.
There is still plenty to settle, including a fifth Champions League place and the relegation battle.
On matchday 35, VAR again shaped results, particularly at Anoeta and Son Moix. In San Sebastián it cancelled a Gorrotxategi goal for an earlier offside and Real Sociedad drew with Betis. In Mallorca, a Morey handball led to a penalty that Ayoze converted for Villarreal to equalise.
The technology also intervened at the Sánchez Pizjuán to rule out an Alexis strike, and at the Tartiere it alerted the referee to two red cards against Oviedo.
There is also a breakdown of how the table would look without VAR after matchday 35, highlighting multiple interventions this season, from retaken penalties for encroachment to goals disallowed for offside or handball.
