Barcelona claimed a 2-0 victory at Villarreal in La Liga on Sunday afternoon, extending their unbeaten league run to eight matches and ending the Yellow Submarine’s six-match winning streak.

Villarreal nearly got off to a dream start as Nicolas Pepe’s header sailed narrowly wide of the post.

It was Barcelona who opened the scoring in the 12th minute from the penalty spot. Santi Comesana brought down Raphinha, and the Brazilian stepped up to dispatch the spot-kick.

Villarreal came close to responding quickly through Tajon Buchanan, whose curled effort dragged wide.

Down the other end, Raphinha hit the woodwork after shooting from the edge of the penalty area.

Lamine Yamal squandered a big chance to double Barcelona’s lead in the 32nd minute, receiving a pass in a promising position, only to drag his effort wide.

Buchanan forced Joan Garcia in the Barcelona goal to make his first big save, as the Spaniard prevented his effort from going into the bottom corner.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men before the interval, as referee Javier Alberola gave Renato Viega a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Yamal.

Two minutes after the restart, the Spanish winger’s effort was superbly kept out by goalkeeper Luiz Junior.

However, Yamal got the better of the Villarreal goalkeeper on 63 minutes, striking the ball home, capitalising on the hosts’ poor defending.

The Barcelona star has now scored 21 goals in 87 appearances, with only Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe scoring more before turning 19 in Europe’s top five leagues in the 21st century.

Barcelona have now restored their four-point lead at the top of the standings after second-placed Real Madrid defeated Sevilla 2-0 on Saturday.
