Lamine Yamal has been named among the substitutes for Spain ahead of their 2026 World Cup opener against Cape Verde.
The Barcelona winger has been battling to prove his fitness after suffering an injury with his club on April 22. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente claimed Yamal was in ‘perfect condition’ ahead of this evening’s game, though no risk has been taken.
“The good news is that Lamine is in perfect condition,” De la Fuente said in a pre-match news conference in Atlanta on Sunday.
“He’s arrived at this point in the state in which we wanted him to be. He’s fine, just like Nico [Williams] and Victor [Muñoz]. They’re all available, although some won’t play the entire game.”
Elsewhere, Unai Simon has is selected ahead of Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in goal, while Marcos Llorente earns the nod at right-back ahead of Pedro Porro.
Spain XI vs Cape Verde: Simon; Llorente, Cubarsi, Laporte, Cucurella; Pedri, Rodri, Fabian Ruiz; Torres, Oyarzabal, Gavi.
