Every generation eventually finds a player who goes on to become a role model.
For nearly two decades, football belonged to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, two icons who rewrote almost every individual record imaginable.
Now, as that era slowly draws to a close, the spotlight has shifted towards the next group of superstars.
For many, Kylian Mbappe was the first player to truly carry that responsibility after exploding onto the scene with AS Monaco in 2016.
Almost a decade later, another teenager is beginning to inspire the same level of excitement.
That teenager is Lamine Yamal.
At just 19 years of age, the Barcelona winger has already become one of the faces of world football.
His confidence divides opinion, but those who watch him every week understand the difference between confidence and arrogance.
Yamal plays with the freedom of someone who believes he belongs on football’s biggest stage, and so far, his performances have backed up that belief.
Naturally, comparisons with Mbappe have become impossible to avoid.
Purely from a statistical perspective, Yamal has enjoyed an extraordinary start to his senior career.

By the age of 19, the Barcelona forward had already played 182 senior matches for club and country, scoring 56 goals and providing 64 assists.
That gives him an astonishing 120 goal contributions, while averaging a goal or assist every 111 minutes.
Mbappe’s numbers paint a different picture.
Before turning 20, the French superstar had made 90 senior appearances, scoring 39 goals and contributing 29 assists, for a total of 68 goal involvements.
Although his overall output was lower, his efficiency in front of goal was exceptional, averaging a goal every 138 minutes without scoring a single penalty.
Those figures immediately highlight one of the biggest differences between the two players.
Yamal has been involved in far more matches because Barcelona trusted him with first-team responsibility at an incredibly young age of 15.
Rather than being eased into elite football, he became one of the club’s attacking leaders, shouldering creative responsibility alongside established internationals.
Mbappe’s rise, meanwhile, was built on ruthless finishing. Every touch inside the penalty area felt decisive, and his ability to convert chances at such a young age helped turn Monaco into one of Europe’s biggest stories before earning his blockbuster move to Paris Saint-Germain.
Comparing raw statistics without context can often be misleading.
When Mbappe turned 19, he had already won Ligue 1, played a starring role in Monaco’s unforgettable run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals and secured one of the biggest transfers in football history by joining PSG.
Within months, he would become a FIFA World Cup winner with France, forever changing the trajectory of his career.
Yamal’s journey has gone differently. He already boasts three La Liga titles, a UEFA European Championship with Spain and a growing list of individual honours that show his rapid rise to the top.
Furthermore, His influence also extends beyond scoring.
At Barcelona, Yamal is already a player teammates actively look for when games become difficult. That level of responsibility is exceptionally rare for someone who only recently celebrated his 19th birthday.
Football has a habit of turning every generational talent into a debate.
Who is better? Who achieved more? Who will finish with the greater career?

Those questions are inevitable, but perhaps they also miss the bigger picture.
Mbappe and Yamal have become top players through completely different strengths.
The Frenchman terrified defenders with explosive acceleration and relentless goalscoring from the very beginning.
Yamal, meanwhile, controls matches through imagination, creativity and an ability to make the extraordinary look routine.
One established himself as the most devastating teenage goalscorer of his era, while the other has emerged as arguably the game’s most gifted teenage creator.
Hence, the fans should not repeat the mistake they made with Messi and Ronaldo.
This time, it should not be Yamal vs Mbappe. Rather, it should be Yamal and Mbappe. Let’s embrace the talents while we can.
