Athletic Club star Nico Williams went back on his word to join La Liga rivals Barcelona over the summer.

That’s according to Relevo, who have on Monday provided a fresh insight into the much-talked about saga.

The name of wide-man Williams, of course, took its place front and centre in the media headlines through the recently-closed transfer window.

This came with the 22-year-old’s continued excellence for club and country alike having sparked widespread interest in his signature.

Barcelona, for one, pushed hard to bring Nico in for much of the summer, eager to unite the Spanish international with close friend Lamine Yamal.

And, at one point, the Blaugrana believed that they had their man.

That’s according to the aforementioned Relevo, who have revealed that, during a four-way video conference all in August, ‘the footballer gave his yes to Joan Laporta’.

Nico, in the end, opted not to stick to his word, instead staying put in the Basque Country, and taking up the iconic no.10 jersey for the 2024 campaign.

And Barca president Laporta, for one, was left nothing short of ‘furious’:

‘Everyone knows Laporta’s anger when the final decision on Nico Williams was announced. “The Barça train passes only once,” said the club.’
