After winning the Barcelona presidential election by a landslide, Joan Laporta is keen on making a solid impression in the coming summer.

Laporta’s primary objective will be to continue the Barcelona project while maintaining the fiscal balance. However, he will also be tasked with the responsibility of finding a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

The Pole’s contract expires at the end of the season, and although Laporta is keen on renewing his contract, he could leave amid lucrative offers elsewhere.

Laporta’s primary target this summer

According to MARCA, Laporta has firmly set his sights on Julian Alvarez in his bid to replace Lewandowski in the years to come.

The Barcelona president has identified the Atletico Madrid frontman as his number one goal heading into the summer transfer window.

Securing his services, though, will not be a straightforward task as Barcelona’s finances may come into play.

Atletico Madrid are not going to make things easy for Barça, a direct rival. Not to mention, the length of Alvarez’s contract serves as great leverage for Los Rojiblancos.

Laporta, therefore, is counting on Alvarez to push for a move away from the Spanish capital by handing in a transfer request

The Argentine has already helped out a bit by admitting his future at Atletico Madrid is far from certain. A further push may put pressure on Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish giants, though, are keen on tying Alvarez down to a long-term contract, which will effectively put an end to Barcelona’s pursuits.

The coming few months, therefore, could prove to be crucial as Barcelona look for a breakthrough in the race to sign the former Manchester City forward.
