What seemed destined to become one of the biggest shocks of the Bundesliga season turned into pure heartbreak for 1. FC Heidenheim at the very last second against FC Bayern Munich.

After leading 3-2 deep into stoppage time, Heidenheim were denied a historic victory by a cruel late equalizer, as Bayern salvaged a dramatic 3-3 draw in Munich.

Heading into the clash, all eyes were on Bayern’s upcoming showdown with Paris Saint-Germain, and there were signs early on that Vincent Kompany’s side were not fully focused. Meanwhile, Frank Schmidt’s Heidenheim arrived with everything to play for in their fight against relegation - and they made that urgency count.

Despite Bayern controlling possession, it was the visitors who struck first. In the 22nd minute, Marnon Busch’s delivery from after a set piece found Budu Zivzivadze, who finished to make it 1-0 and set a new club record with goals in four consecutive Bundesliga matches.

The shock intensified in the 31st minute. Once again, Busch was involved, threading a perfect ball through for Eren Dinkçi, who beat Jonas Urbig to double Heidenheim’s lead, with Jonathan Tah caught out defensively.

Bayern struggled to break down Heidenheim’s compact structure, but just before half-time, Leon Goretzka produced a moment of quality, curling a direct free-kick into the net - Bayern’s first such goal of the Bundesliga season - to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Trailing at the break for the first time in a home league match under Kompany, Bayern responded decisively. The introduction of Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich, Michael Olise and Luis Díaz changed the tempo completely.

In the 57th minute, Olise’s corner found Goretzka, who headed home his second goal to level the score at 2-2. Bayern were now in full control, but Heidenheim continued to threaten on the counter.

And then came another stunning twist. In the 76th minute, Zivzivadze once again showed his class, cutting in from the left and curling a sensational effort into the far corner in trademark Arjen Robben fashion to restore Heidenheim’s lead at 3-2.

What followed was a frantic finale. Bayern threw everything forward in search of an equalizer, while Heidenheim defended with incredible determination. Goalkeeper Diant Ramaj produced a series of outstanding saves to keep the visitors ahead, as wave after wave of Bayern attacks crashed against their resistance.

Nine minutes of stoppage time only heightened the tension. Heidenheim were seconds away from a famous victory - but football can be brutally cruel.

With what proved to be the final action of the match, Olise tried his luck from distance. Ramaj managed to push the ball onto the post, but from there it ricocheted back onto the goalkeeper and agonizingly over the line. The equalizer made it 3-3 and left Heidenheim players stunned in disbelief.

The final whistle confirmed a dramatic draw that felt like a win for Bayern - and a devastating loss for Heidenheim.

For the visitors, the consequences are significant. Instead of climbing closer to safety, they remain on 23 points, now two behind VfL Wolfsburg and three behind FC St. Pauli, both of whom still have to play.

Heidenheim had come within seconds of rewriting Bundesliga history as well, with a win by the last placed team over Bayern Munich (the last one came by Hannover in 2006) - but in the end, they were left with nothing but heartbreak in Munich.
