International breaks can be pretty dull when you’re itching to watch some club football, but they do at least allow some smaller storylines to bubble to the surface.

While we’re all waiting for Chelsea to get back into action, many Blues were in action internationally, none more prominently that Ryan Kavuma-McQueen. He scored four and assisted one for England’s Under-17s team to take the transition from a name you’re vaguely aware of in the academy to one you’re tracking actively.

The reports about his progress following such an impressive breakout moment were all about how Chelsea were hoping to tie him down to a professional contract on his 17th birthday in January, and today’s update from Nizaar Kinsella of the BBC claims we’ve done that.

The Chelsea reporter says that RKMQ is “ready to commit” to Chelsea and “despite interest from other top clubs.”

The situation is potentially a sore one for Chelsea, who lost Rio Ngumoha to Liverpool at a similar age a year ago, and now have to watch him thrive.

Chelsea look to have sold Kavuma-McQueen on long term dream

Kavuma-McQueen looks set to stay however – he’s already been bumped up to the Under-21s to play with much older players, and trains regularly with the first team.

Enzo Maresca used the Conference League to hand out 8 debuts last season – that won’t be as easy in the Champions League, but players like Kavuma-McQueen can still be hopeful of being rewarded if they commit to the long term at Stamford Bridge.

Who knows – perhaps one day we will be looking back on losing Ngumoha as at least a partially good thing for helping clear the way for another exceptional talent?
