Lazio Coach Baroni Tests Former Real Madrid Defender in New Position

Lazio manager Marco Baroni is reportedly considering deploying Mario Gila as a right-back following Manuel Lazzari’s recent injury.

The Italian capital side confirmed the Italian full-back sustained a medium-grade muscular injury in the left thigh, so he could be out of action for a month. This leaves Adam Marusic as the only natural option on the right side of the four-man backline. While reinstating Elseid Hysaj could be a solution, it remains a risky one, as the club wouldn’t be able to restore Lazzari until January.

Hence, Baroni is trying to come up with a new solution, and according to Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the answer to this dilemma could be shifting Gila to the right side. The 24-year-old is a central defender by trade, but Lazio could be well covered at the heart of the backline with Samuel Gigot overcoming his injury ordeal.

Baroni Testing Gila at Right-Back

With the Frenchman joining Alessio Romangnoli and Patric, Baroni would be able to rely on three centre-backs vying for two spots. Therefore, the manager could temporarily switch Gila to the right-back slot. The Spaniard would rotate with Marusic who has been starting regularly in the Europa League while serving as an understudy for Lazzari in Serie A.

It remains to be seen if Gila’s performances in training will convince Baroni to entrust him in this new role in the coming fixtures.
