Lazio captain Mattia Zaccagni is reportedly facing a lengthy period on the sidelines after hurting himself in training.

Mattia Zaccagni Picks Up an Injury Ahead of Lazio vs Genoa

The winger was expected to maintain his automatic starting spot against Genoa, but the fans were left perplexed by his omission on Friday, only to find out that the player sustained an injury, as confirmed by the club through an official statement.

Mattia Zaccagni will not be available for the match due to a muscle issue sustained during the final training session, affecting the oblique muscle of the abdomen. The player will nevertheless sit on the bench to remain close to the team.

The 30-year-old was seen in the dugout, cheering on his teammates who went on to earn a last-gasp 3-2 win over their Ligurian visitors. However, it remains unclear when he’ll be able to take part in the action again.

Zaccagni’s Injury Timetable

According to Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the club doctors fear that Zaccagni may have suffered a Grade II muscle injury, which will effectively rule him out of action for an extended period of time. Il Corriere dello Sport is also reporting the same concerns, believing that the skipper would be ruled out for at least one month if the injury is confirmed.

Daniel Maldini to the Rescue?

While it remains to be seen what the test results will detect, at least Maurizio Sarri will be able to rely on Daniel Maldini, who’s capable of filling in for Zaccagni on the left wing. The 24-year-old played as a striker on his Lazio debut against Genoa, but he might be more comfortable in a supporting role on the flanks.
