According to Coluna Do Fla, Flamengo dismissed Filipe Luís on Tuesday, a decision taken by president Luiz Eduardo Baptista after the 8-0 win over Madureira at the Maracanã. A leaked audio recording features Baptista setting out why the change was made.

In the message, he acknowledged that something being discussed did occur, though he said it was not the main reason for the exit. He added that people have the right to hold conversations and weigh up what suits them, not only in Filipe’s case.

Baptista said his duty is to the institution and that, if he believes the current path will not take Flamengo where they want to be, he must intervene. He likened the situation to boarding the wrong train and getting off at the first station to turn back.

He said he acted because, taken together, recent decisions were not leading in the direction he deemed appropriate for the club. Filipe Luís had not been his preferred choice to stay on at the start of 2025, yet after subsequent titles he approved a renewal that lasted fewer than three months in 2026.

Flamengo have an agreement in place to appoint Leonardo Jardim following Filipe Luís’s departure. He is expected to arrive in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday night at Galeão International Airport to sign a two-year contract.

Without Filipe Luís, Flamengo now turn to the Campeonato Carioca final against Fluminense on Sunday 08 at the Maracanã, kick-off 18:00 Brasília time. The match will be shown on Rede Globo and on pay-per-view via Premiere.
