Leandro Barreiro has been recalled by Luxembourg for a Nations League play-off against Malta, first leg on 26 March in Ta’ Qali and the return on 31 March at Estádio do Luxemburgo. According to Glorioso 1904, Jeff Strasser’s side travel for the opener then host the second leg.

The 26-year-old midfielder is in fine form for Benfica, starting 24 matches this season. He has four goals and five assists, the latter his best career return, and he is close to his personal goals record of six.

Fellow Benfica player Tomás Cruz has also been called up. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has 12 caps and joined in 2023/24 from Hannover. This season he has made 26 appearances for Benfica B in Liga 2 and one for the club’s under-23s.

If Luxembourg win the tie, they will join League C4 with Iceland, Bulgaria and Estonia. If they lose, they will drop to League D1 to face Andorra and the winner of Gibraltar against Latvia.

Valued at 15 million euros, Barreiro has kicked on since José Mourinho’s arrival. He has played 43 competitive games for Benfica, totalling 2,406 minutes.
