He succeeds former Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot after a fortnight of talks with interim chairman Graham Wood.

Several players have left since the end of last season, leaving 14 contracted seniors. Discussions continue with winger Harry Chapman and ex-Sunderland and Hartlepool United defender Kenton Richardson, who previously worked with Cattermole.

Gateshead have become known for developing young loanees at the International Stadium, and Cattermole said he could turn to his old clubs to continue that model.

He stressed any moves depend on availability and on the views of academy directors, parent clubs and agents. He believes Gateshead can follow development plans and maintain close communication. He added that players would find care and challenge, nothing should be ruled out, but he is not even 24 hours into the job.
