Huddersfield Town boss Lee Grant has admitted that Joe Taylor could leave the club before the end of the January transfer window.

Huddersfield Town boss Lee Grant has admitted that Joe Taylor could leave the club just a year after he joined from Luton as the forward struggles for game time.

There was a lot of excitement at the Yorkshire club when they sealed a deal for Taylor from Luton 12 months ago, with some reports claiming they paid around £3m for the player, which is a substantial sum by League One standards.

That came after Taylor had flourished out on loan from Kenilworth Road, enjoying productive spells at Colchester and Lincoln, the latter which came in the third tier.

Yet, Taylor struggled upon joining Huddersfield, as he managed just two goals in 15 appearances as they failed to win promotion back to the Championship.

It had been hoped that Grant’s arrival in the summer, combined with a full pre-season, would see the 23-year-old rediscover his best form, but that hasn’t happened.

Taylor has managed just four goals in 18 outings this season, and he is now way down the pecking order, to the extent that he has failed to make the matchday squad in recent weeks.

Therefore, a January move would seem to suit all parties, and Grant didn’t dismiss the idea that Taylor could leave when speaking to the Yorkshire Post.

I don’t know (if Taylor will leave). I really don’t. I think there’s probably several obvious ones where you can look at (it) and say ‘well, if he’s not playing, I don’t know how that situation continues to be as it is’.

So that’s an obvious one, and there’s maybe one or two others like that, where you can look at and go, ‘well, that probably doesn’t work for the club or the player or the manager or anybody if that one’s not going in the right direction’. So again, I’ll try to look at all of those ones individually as and when.”

Joe Taylor needs to leave Huddersfield Town to rediscover his best form

Ultimately, this transfer has not worked out how anyone expected after Taylor’s big-money arrival last year, but it’s important to remember that he is still a young player who has shown his ability in the past.

With that in mind, Huddersfield may not want to give up on Taylor just yet, but it’s also clear he needs to be playing week in, week out, so a loan move may be what he needs right now. Huddersfield, however, may like the idea of recouping at least some of their money for Taylor, which could then be reinvested in the market to bolster Town's promotion efforts.

After an inconsistent start to life with Grant, the Terriers are now unbeaten in seven as they look to close the gap on the top two.

Taylor has barely featured in that period, and Bojan Radulovic, in particular, has really stepped up, so the ex-Luton man can’t really have any complaints that he isn’t involved.
