Three Huddersfield substitutes contributed to goals in their 3-2 win over Peterborough
Despite being heavy favourites against one of the early-season strugglers, Huddersfield Town were matched for the most part by Peterborough United, and even went a goal down at the Accu Stadium on Saturday.
Harry Leonard's free-kick may have profited from a huge Jimmy-Jay Morgan deflection, but when Posh took the lead, there couldn't have been many complaints, as whilst Huddersfield had contained League One's bottom side throughout the first half, they hadn't created much themselves.
Lee Grant, early in his management career, was faced with the task of switching things to try and force a reaction. The Terriers hadn't been able to salvage any points in games they had gone behind in, and they had 40 minutes to change that.
Grant shuffled his midfield pack before the hour mark, bringing on Will Alves and Leo Castledine in place of Ben Wiles and Ruben Roosken. 10 minutes later, Huddersfield had turned the game on its head and led 2–1 thanks to a goal and an assist from his two substitutes.
That wasn't all, however, as a late change which saw Alfie May partner Joe Taylor up top resulted in the third, which all but secured the points for Lee Grant's side.
Early into the second half, Peterborough, who had picked up just one point all season, had a shock lead against Huddersfield.
Whilst still in the infancy of the season, the Terriers had lost each league game they had gone behind. Most recently against Barnsley, but also against Blackpool in a game in which the Tangerines played the better part of an hour with ten men.
Darren Ferguson's side were almost certainly going to try and defend what they had, and it was up to Lee Grant to shuffle his pack and force something.
In the 56th minute, Grant made a double change, bringing on a couple of his talented young loanees, as Alves replaced Roosken on the wing, and Castledine came on in the centre of the midfield for Wiles.
Four minutes later, Alves made a late darting run in at the back post to latch onto a Lasse Sorensen cross to equalise, and then seven minutes later, Castledine's blocked effort fell to Herbie Kane to unleash a rocket which found the top left corner via a deflection.
Grant's subs had changed things, and now it was Peterborough who were chasing a result.
Huddersfield caught Peterborough on the break a few times following that goal, but it wasn't until the 91st minute that they were able to double their advantage. Late substitute Alfie May played a huge part, sliding through former Posh man Joe Taylor to ice the three points.
Grant's subs were involved in all three goals, and with Peterborough scoring a late consolation, all three were vital in securing their fifth league win of the season.
Despite his stellar career as a first-team coach, many had questions about how Grant would perform in his first managerial role at a side expected to challenge near the top of League One.
Through six games, Huddersfield had won four times, and all four wins came to nil. Whenever the Terriers had gone behind, they weren't able to claw back a result, and few may have been looking at an inability to change games from the dugout when chasing points.
However, Grant's substitutions on Saturday worked wonders, and turned a rather stale attacking performance through 60 minutes into one which netted three and probably should have had more by the end of the game.
There'll still be some critics, as many expected Huddersfield to blow Peterborough away at the Accu Stadium, so to come away with a slim one-goal margin of victory could be concerning, but it's clear that Grant is warming quickly to his new role.
