Leeds United’s defensive picture has shifted after the £34m signing of Tarik Muharemovic, with the BBC reporting interest in England international John Stones.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina centre-back arrives from Serie A side Sassuolo on a five-year contract, becoming the club’s second most expensive signing.

His arrival came after fellow left-sided centre-back Pascal Struijk left for Brighton in a £20m move.

Muharemovic now joins Joe Rodon and Jaka Bijol. They are viewed as the likely back three if Daniel Farke keeps the system that worked in the second half of last season.

James Justin and Sebastiaan Bornauw add cover in the middle, and captain Ethan Ampadu can step into defence if required.

The report said Leeds looked into Stones towards the end of last season. He is a free agent after his Etihad contract expired this summer, and his wages were considered a likely stumbling block.

With Muharemovic on board, the defensive landscape at Elland Road has changed.
