Sky Sports reports that Tottenham captain Christian Romero will miss the remainder of the season, a significant setback for Leeds United’s relegation rivals, adding that the Argentinian’s World Cup hopes are not thought to be over. Spurs have seven games left.
Romero left the pitch in tears during the second half of Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Sunderland. He collided with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky while shielding the ball under pressure from Brian Brobbey.
Post-match, Roberto De Zerbi hoped the issue was not serious and stressed Romero’s importance to their run-in.
Tottenham dropped into the Premier League relegation zone before playing at the weekend, as West Ham moved two points clear with a 4-0 win over Wolves. Defeat at the Stadium of Light kept Spurs 18th, three points behind Leeds, who visit Manchester United this evening.
Leeds play again before Spurs return, hosting Wolves hours before Brighton visit north London. By around 5pm on Saturday, Daniel Farke’s side could be three to nine points ahead.
Spurs host Leeds on Monday, May 11, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a clash that looks almost certain to be a relegation six-pointer without their captain. Further injuries include Mohammed Kudus, who has had a quad setback and is likely out for the season, plus Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert. James Maddison has not featured this campaign due to a pre-season knee injury.
