Newcastle United’s winless start in the Premier League stretched to three games on Saturday, as Eddie Howe’s depleted squad failed to find a breakthrough in a frustrating 0-0 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.
The Magpies, without key players such as Joelinton and Anthony Gordon, looked short of ideas in the final third. Jacob Murphy came closest with efforts in either half, but was not enough to force a decisive moment. The lack of a recognised striker once again left Newcastle’s attack blunt, with little to show for their possession.
There were positives to take, however. Sven Botman impressed at the back before being forced off with a knock that will worry Howe ahead of a congested run of fixtures. Jacob Ramsey, making his first Premier League start for Newcastle, offered promise in midfield, driving forward with intent and asking questions of the Leeds defence.
Leeds, meanwhile, carved out opportunities of their own. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, making his Premier League debut for Leeds United after a summer move, looked lively but spurned the chances that fell his way. Like Newcastle, Leeds lacked the cutting edge to turn pressure into goals.
For The Magpies, the recent arrival of German striker Nick Woltemade may provide the solution to their attacking woes. With crucial fixtures on the horizon in both the Premier League and Champions League, Howe will hope his new forward can inject much-needed firepower into a side currently struggling to convert promise into points.
