Leeds United have issued their first substantive update since main construction began last month on Elland Road’s redevelopment, a £130m project. Work is scheduled to continue to 2030, by which point the West and North Stands are to be rebuilt and capacity increased to 53,000.
The club said in a statement that construction on the West Stand is officially under way, beginning with removal of the banqueting suite, and that the new stand will be built over the existing structure as the first step towards UEFA Category 4 status.
Preparatory activity had been ongoing since January after planning permission was granted. Work started within hours of the final match of the season, a 1-0 win over Brighton, with West Stand guests asked to depart within two hours so crews could move in.
Since then the West Stand floodlights have been taken down. Demolition has removed the security hub in the south-west corner and the away changing rooms.
Club ambassadors Stuart Dallas, Tony Dorigo and Eddie Gray joined representatives from Leeds City Council and the Leeds United Foundation to mark the start of works.
The club’s plans include improved seating comfort and sightlines, enhanced concourses and fan spaces, better accessibility and upgraded hospitality. Increasing capacity is described as vital, with a 32,000 season-ticket waiting list, and the project is intended to support bids for major international tournaments and showcase events with civic partners, and to bring cultural and economic value to the Leeds City Region. Regular updates will follow.
