Leeds United end Max Wober contract early as sell-on clause curbs fee | OneFootball

Leeds United have agreed to terminate Max Wober’s contract a year early, drawing a line under the defender’s time at Elland Road.

According to The Athletic, the 28-year-old is in Germany for medical checks with Schalke ahead of a free transfer.

Wober arrived from RB Salzburg for £10 million in January 2023 on a four-and-a-half-year deal to 2027, but made 28 appearances before spending two seasons on loan.

He played 25 Bundesliga games for Borussia Monchengladbach, then sustained a serious knee injury on his Werder Bremen debut last season. He featured only three times and Bremen chose not to trigger a permanent option.

The Austrian had hoped to return for pre-season, yet he was left out of the USA tour squad, pointing to a permanent departure.

A sell-on clause from his £10 million move entitles RB Salzburg to a share of any future fee, and together with last season’s injury, any sale was likely to bring in little.

Ending the deal removes a Premier League wage from Leeds’ books. Wober was among those who used relegation release clauses to join Monchengladbach after the 2023 drop to the Championship.

Schalke have returned to the Bundesliga after three seasons in the second tier. They are one of Germany’s historic clubs, winners of the 1996/97 UEFA Cup.
