Leeds United have handed Jayden Lienou a new three-year contract ahead of the club’s US pre-season tour with the senior squad.

The club said in a statement that the 18-year-old left-sided defender will remain at Elland Road until 2029 after an eye-catching debut campaign with Scott Gardner’s Under-21s, making 26 appearances that included EFL Trophy and National League Cup action.

Lienou joined from Manchester City last summer and was promoted to Daniel Farke’s bench for Premier League matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion after injury ruled out first-choice left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson.

He was later called up by Craig Bellamy for Wales’ post-season camp and friendlies with Ghana and Romania, drawing strong praise. The Wales Under-19 international was an unused substitute against Ghana.

The teenager has trained with the first team from the start of pre-season and is expected to fly to America today. Farke sought more left-footed options last term with Gudmundsson the only natural senior left-back, and after Pascal Struijk’s departure, £34m signing Tarik Muharemovic is set to operate at left-sided centre-back. The Whites are also expected to explore left-back options in the window.
