Crystal Palace have moved ahead in the chase for Jorgen Strand Larsen, although the striker and his agent prefer Leeds United, according to Leeds Live. Leeds are holding a £40m ceiling because of their PSR position.
Spending capacity is currently maxed out, though there is time to offset purchases before 30 June to balance the books.
If Palace take a £35m offer for Jean-Philippe Mateta, they would be better placed to outbid Leeds, given their stronger PSR standing. A £50m agreement with Wolves is said to be under discussion.
United do not plan to recruit an alternative striker this month. Strand Larsen is viewed as a rare mid-season opening, after scoring 14 Premier League goals for Wolves last season.
Leeds sources are not fretting about missing out, citing belief in their current forwards. Given his age, the Norwegian has been seen as a long-term option who would be the youngest striker among senior ranks at Leeds.
With Leeds his preferred destination, Wolves could yet be forced to consider that stance if he declines a Palace move, although the Eagles presently look his most likely landing spot.
Wolves know the fee would drop if they wait until the summer, so a departure before Monday’s seven pm deadline seems inevitable.
Leeds remain open to a back-up left-back despite Gabriel Gudmundsson’s quicker-than-expected return timeline, but nothing concrete has emerged. Facundo Buonanotte could end up as their only January addition.
