Leeds United issue Ramadan guidance and confirm in-game break for Norwich FA Cup tie | OneFootball

Leeds United have told supporters there will be a planned pause in Sunday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie with Norwich City so players observing Ramadan can break their fast, following controversy at their recent match with Manchester City.

The club said in a statement that play will pause shortly after sunset in Leeds at 5:56pm, likely around the 75th minute. The referee will allow a brief break for players from both teams to take fluids and energy supplements under the agreed protocol, with Joel Piroe among those fasting.

A similar stoppage against City drew booing from some Leeds fans, which was described as disappointing and unexpected, and the incident drew national criticism.

Mitigating factors outlined included it being the first such pause at Elland Road and messaging on the big screen not being visible to about 25% of the ground, including the South Stand.

Confusion may also have stemmed from a contentious ‘tactical timeout’ during an injury break at the Etihad in November 2025, with a comparable incident against Sunderland last Tuesday also prompting jeers. Some players were initially unsure why play had stopped.

Any booing of players breaking fast under the protocol was explicitly condemned. Supporters, including the Supporter Advisory Board, were thanked for feedback that informed the club’s response.

Football still has work to do to eradicate racism, homophobia, tragedy chanting and the Jimmy Saville taunts aimed at Leeds supporters by opposition fans. Sunday offers a chance to show everyone is welcome at Elland Road.
