Leeds United are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Julian Weigl.

Leeds United are reportedly interested in Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Julian Weigl, although a move will depend on the Championship leaders winning promotion.

The Whites are currently five points clear of third-placed Sheffield United with just four games to go, so promotion is certainly on the cards for Daniel Farke’s side.

Naturally, the recruitment team at Elland Road will be planning for both scenarios, and it appears Leeds will be in the market for Weigl if they do go up.

Leeds United lining up summer transfer move for Germany international Julian Weigl

That’s after Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenburg revealed that ‘initial discussions’ have taken place between Leeds and the player, although Weigl will only consider a move to Yorkshire if the club are in the top-flight.

Leeds United are monitoring Julian Weigl!" Plettenberg wrote.

"The 29 y/o captain of Borussia M’gladbach earns a gross annual salary of around €3–3.5m, plus performance bonuses and incentives, making him one of the club’s top earners.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke and Weigl still maintain a good relationship. Leeds have already made initial contact to assess whether the midfielder would consider a move to England.

Despite being under contract at Gladbach until 2028, Weigl would only consider a move to the Premier League. So far, there have been no talks between the clubs.”

If the move did happen, it would see Farke reunite with Weigl, as he was in charge of the Bundesliga side when Weigl moved to the club on an initial loan back in 2022.

Julian Weigl would bring experience and quality to Leeds United if he lands at Elland Road

Of course, Leeds still have work to do to win promotion, but plans will have to be in place for whether the club goes up, and it’s clear how important recruitment is going to be.

The aim in the summer is going to be quality over quantity, as it’s all about building a Leeds team that can survive in the top-flight.

So, Weigl would fit the bill on that front. He has won six caps for Germany, he has played in the Champions League, and he is a key figure for Gladbach now as they sit 7th in the Bundesliga, with a top four finish a possibility.

The fact Farke knows about Weigl and his character is an added bonus, and at 29, he is the sort of midfielder who can make an instant impact.
