Leeds United expect parts of their summer transfer business to be pushed back by the World Cup, and have moved to quash talk of a move for Hidemasa Morita.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Leeds are not pursuing the 30-year-old Japan international, who is nearing the end of his Sporting contract after 163 appearances, including Champions League and Europa League. Reports elsewhere had suggested advanced talks or a deal close, but the club have neither looked at him nor held interest and the links have been dismissed as nonsense.

Recruitment work is ongoing, with staff drawing up shortlists and profiling targets. Even so, any claims that Leeds are closing in on completed signings at this stage should be treated with caution.

Three games remain in the Premier League season and top-flight status is not yet mathematically secured.

The summer window opens in five weeks, and there is an expectation it may drag on because of the World Cup. Many deals, at Leeds and elsewhere, are likely to be completed after the tournament.
