Leeds United have often smashed their transfer record in the Premier League era, from Man Utd icon Lee Sharpe and World Cup star Tomas Brolin to £35m Georginio Rutter.

According to Leeds Live, Daniel Farke wants marquee additions after a 14th-place finish as a newly promoted side, and chairman Paraag Marathe has hinted at different profiles. He said the bar for minutes is high and there could be occasional moonshot moves for highly creative, differential players. Leeds are closing in on a free transfer for Fulham winger Harry Wilson and have also been linked with Germany international Julian Brandt.

Sharpe arrived in August 1996 as a joint-record £4.5m signing, Howard Wilkinson’s last act as manager. With Class of 92 competition at Man Utd and George Graham replacing Wilkinson a month later, momentum stalled. He made 26 league appearances with five goals, missed the next season injured, then joined Bradford City for £250,000 in summer 1999 after a loan.

Brolin had joined a year earlier for the same fee after starring for Parma and helping Sweden finish third at the 1994 World Cup. Injuries hit hard, restricting him to 19 league games and four goals. Loans to FC Zurich and Parma preceded a permanent switch to Crystal Palace in November 1997, and he retired at 28.

Leeds underlined survival intent by spending a record £35m on Hoffenheim forward Georginio Rutter in January 2023, still the club’s costliest deal. He failed to score in 11 Premier League outings as Leeds were relegated, then posted six goals and 15 assists in the Championship, drawing Brighton’s interest. Leeds later sold him for £40m, and he has 11 goals in 67 games for the Seagulls.
