Barry Douglas, a Leeds United title-winner under Marcelo Bielsa, has retired from playing after announcing his decision in a social media post, prompting tributes from the club’s 2019/20 promotion group.
Douglas joined from Wolves in summer 2018 for around three million pounds, the first permanent arrival of Bielsa’s reign. The Scotland international made 44 appearances across two Championship seasons and helped deliver promotion.
He never featured in the Premier League for Leeds, spending 2020/21 on loan at Blackburn Rovers, then departing when his contract expired the following year. His 17-year career also took in Dundee United, Lech Poznan and Konyaspor.
In total he played 455 games for seven clubs in four countries. His honours include Championship titles with Leeds and Wolves, two Ekstraklasa crowns with Lech Poznan and domestic cups in Poland and Türkiye.
He described it as the moment every footballer expects, reflected proudly on nearly 500 games and multiple titles, thanked the clubs he served and treasured fulfilling the dream of representing his country.
Messages rolled in from former teammates, with Mateusz Klich highlighting his Polish language skills, Patrick Bamford offering congratulations and Luke Ayling recalling memories shared. Gaetano Berardi praised his career, while Leif Davis thanked him for guidance and Tyler Roberts called it a career to be proud of.
