Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson missed Sweden training again on Wednesday through illness, putting Monday’s World Cup opener against Tunisia in doubt.
The left-back had only just returned from a five-week hamstring lay-off sustained in April’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea at Wembley. He was also absent from Tuesday’s session.
“Everyone is in training except Gabriel who is still at the hotel. He is still in a bad state. I can’t answer [whether his situation has improved]. I’m not the team’s doctor.” Sweden press officer Petra Thorén was speaking to Aftonbladet.
“We don’t go into the health of individual players. He keeps to himself like you do when you’re in a bad way. He has mild symptoms of illness. I won’t go into what it is.”
The report also noted he remained absent on Wednesday afternoon and suggested he would be a certain starter if he recovers, with Graham Potter preferring him at left wing-back after starting both World Cup qualifying play-offs.
Teammate Hjalmar Ekdal said: “We haven’t received much information about how serious it is. He’s probably in a bad way and isolated as much as he can.”
Sweden kick off against Tunisia in Guadalupe, Mexico on June 15, then face the Netherlands in Houston, Texas five days later. They head to Arlington in the same state to meet Ao Tanaka’s Japan on June 26.
