Legendary Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque has given his support to new Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, saying the former midfielder fully deserves this opportunity.

Speaking during a recent media appearance, Del Bosque highlighted Alonso’s journey from player to coach, explaining that his former pupil has proven his quality with the teams he’s managed so far.

“A few players from that generation showed an interest in becoming coaches, and Xabi is one of them. It’s no surprise that he has reached this level.

“He has demonstrated with his previous teams that he deserves this chance at Real Madrid,” Del Bosque said.

Del Bosque, who managed Spain’s national team to World Cup glory in 2010, knows Xabi Alonso well from their time together during Spain’s golden generation.

He recalled the special memories of South Africa 2010, the year Spain lifted their first and only World Cup trophy.

“It all happened so fast,” Del Bosque reflected. “It was a huge step forward for our country in every sense.

We had our own style of play, great players, and of course, the bit of luck you need to become champions.”

On Club World Cup and PSG

When asked about the recent FIFA Club World Cup, something that La Liga president Javier Tebas has publicly been against, Del Bosque pointed out that the tournament, like any other, had both positive and negative moments.

“As a fan, you don’t get too caught up in whether it’s held at the start or end of the season, you just watch the games,” he said.

He added that Paris Saint-Germain probably made the best overall impression during the tournament, but Chelsea managed to upset the odds and win the final.

“That’s football. PSG looked like the strongest team throughout, but then Chelsea came along and beat them.”
