Leicester City have been docked six points for breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules, and both the club and the Premier League have lodged appeals. They are contesting the sanction in opposite directions.

According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, an independent commission imposed the immediate penalty on 5 February 2026 after finding Leicester exceeded the permitted loss limit by £20.8m across 2022 to 2024. The club also failed to file audited annual accounts by the 31 December 2024 deadline.

There had been significant speculation that a 12-point deduction would apply, mirroring administration cases, but the commission ruled that would be too harsh for a PSR breach. Leicester argued successfully for a reduced total by showing year-on-year improvement in their finances.

Both parties have appealed, with Leicester seeking to cut or overturn the sanction, while the league argues it is too light. The Premier League had pressed for a 12-point starting point and said aggravated factors could have taken it beyond 20. Its specific appeal challenges the lack of a separate penalty for the late accounts.

Leicester may also contend that the EFL had no authority to enforce a Premier League deduction because of the timing of rule changes. The club maintains the sanction is disproportionate to their circumstances.

An appeal board will now be appointed to hear the case and issue a final ruling. The league wants an urgent resolution to give clarity before the Championship season ends.
