Léo Pereira marked his first World Cup call-up at 30 by diving into his home pool fully clothed. The Flamengo centre-back learned of his selection on Monday while watching Carlo Ancelotti name Brazil's squad for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Wearing a Brazil shirt, he gathered family, friends and his agent, Richardo Scheidt, at his home for the announcement. According to Globo.com, he later posted on social media, reflecting on God's plans for his life and urging Brazilians to join the pursuit of a sixth title.
Pereira secured his place late in the cycle. He had only represented Brazil at youth level until his first senior call-up in March, when he started two friendlies, a 2-1 defeat to France and a 3-1 win over Croatia, completing 90 minutes in both and impressing.
A regular starter for Flamengo since 2022, he has been a consistent performer and has cut out earlier errors. His level has remained high since last season.
In 2026 he has played 22 matches, 21 from the start, and scored once, a free-kick in a 3-0 win over Botafogo at Nilton Santos in the Brasileirão. His standing with the club's support is correspondingly strong.
