Leroy Sané was booed by the home crowd as Germany beat Ghana 2-1 in Stuttgart, before team-mates and Julian Nagelsmann stepped in to defend him.
Sané came on in the 78th minute at the MHP Arena and was jeered, including on his early touches. He then supplied the pass for Denis Undav’s 88th-minute winner. According to L'Équipe, the reaction in camp was a call for unity.
"I ask that next time Leroy, or any other player, comes on there are no boos," said Denis Undav. "We are a team and Leroy is an integral part of the group. I hope they support him next time," he told Kicker.
Nagelsmann also backed the Galatasaray winger, saying he had addressed supporters and taken plenty of criticism. "In general I do not like our players being booed before they have even had their first chance. I find it unfair, but you can never please everyone."
Sané’s call-up, despite a dip in form in the Turkish league, had drawn fire from former Germany international Dietmar Hamann, who told Sky in March that others such as Adeyemi and Beier deserved more. "It is incomprehensible to me," he said. Even so, Sané has two goals and three assists in his past four Germany games and remains in contention for the 2026 World Cup.
