Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has given a peak through the curtain into his conversation with club captain Bernardo Silva over the latter’s contract situation.

Silva will be out of contract at the Etihad Stadium in June and there is no indication as yet that the 31-year-old will put pen to paper and extend an illustrious, trophy-laden nine year spell in England’s north-west.

The Portugal international has led Manchester City to a plethora of success since his £43 million arrival from AS Monaco in 2017, being appointed club captain by Guardiola himself last summer following the departures of Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne.

Manchester City are chasing silverware on four fronts in the coming months and while there remains a cloud of doubt hanging over Silva’s club future, the playmaker has admitted publicly that he has already made his mind up over his contract plans.

The Benfica academy graduate has been in fine form for Manchester City of late, with the Blues turning the ship around and gaining a renewed sense of confidence in their title challenge with Arsenal in recent weeks.

Silva sparked a thrilling late comeback win at Anfield last weekend and ran the show in Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Fulham in midweek, with Guardiola quizzed about the Portuguese’s future ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round tie with Salford City.

“No, I don’t have an idea,” the Manchester City manager said in a press conference on Friday. “Honestly, I said to him (Silva), ‘When you take a decision, let me know’. But I don’t have any idea.”

Guardiola was further quizzed on Silva’s captaincy style and particularly how the playmaker leads by example on the pitch. “He can talk, too! It’s the best leadership, right? When you lead by example. And anyone in the locker room and dressing room cannot deny that he has that,” the Catalan added on Silva.

Silva is expected to be rested against Salford City as Guardiola shuffles his pack to keep his strongest XI fit and firing for the run-in, with the likes of James Trafford and Max Alleyne expected to be given a start.

Erling Haaland is a fitness doubt heading into the tie after coming off at half-time in a 3-0 win over Fulham in midweek, with Guardiola later adding that the 25-year-old striker had complained of ‘niggles’ and that a decision on his availability will be taken on Saturday.

Jeremy Doku and Savinho are expected to remain out, with John Stones in contention to feature after returning to full first-team training last week.

Manchester City have picked up momentum at the right time after a poor January to start 2026 and Guardiola will know the importance of taking it one game at a time between now and the end of the season.
